“Plan, stay focused on your goals, and ensure that you build in time for yourself.”
Getting to know Teresa…
Tell us about your current business. What do you offer, how long have you been there, size of your business?
I operate the Wangi Queen Showboat, a historic 1922 ferry that is heritage-listed with the Australian National Maritime Museum. Originally serving on Sydney Harbour before the Harbour Bridge was completed in 1932, Wangi Queen is best known for her 37 years of service on Lake Macquarie, where she was the go-to vessel for weddings and parties.
I have worked in marine tourism for over 20 years, my husband and I ran a water taxi out of Manly for 10 years, we worked on various luxury vessels on Sydney Harbour running tours and experiences, and also worked with Sydney Tall Ships, from whom we are currently vendor leasing Wangi Queen. We also operated the Port Stephens Ferry Service (Tea Gardens Ferry Service) for 5 years before taking on Wangi Queen and bringing her to Port Stephens at the end of 2022.
Based at Lemon Tree Passage, we offer unique morning tea, lunch, and sunset dinner cruises that highlight the breathtaking beauty and rich history of the western harbour. We also provide private charters for birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas Parties etc. What sets us apart is our exclusive focus on touring the western harbour, showcasing the area's natural wonders and historical significance.
This year, I’ve been focusing on creating unique events, such as Sunday Soundwaves, a monthly jazz cruise featuring different jazz duos and trios. I’ve had the privilege of working with a fantastic group of musicians through the Newcastle Jazz Club and am excited to bring this new musical experience to Port Stephens.
I have a small but amazing team of mostly female deckhands, all of whom live in Lemon Tree Passage. They share my passion for the environment and are dedicated to providing our guests with an unforgettable experience. We board our vessel at both Lemon Tree Passage and Taylors Beach, making it more convenient for visitors to the Bay as well as for locals who want to experience Wangi Queen and the western harbour. The Taylors Beach wharf is especially handy, saving our guests a 35-minute drive to Lemon Tree Passage.
On a good day, what do you love most about being in business?
On a good day, I truly appreciate the freedom to create new opportunities and events. I love the challenge of designing fresh experiences that excite our customers, and the satisfaction of seeing them enjoy their time on the Wangi Queen. Meeting new people is always rewarding, and I value the connections I make with our guests. Another aspect I enjoy is being able to use my creativity. I have a passion for graphic and web design, so it’s fulfilling to incorporate my own designs into the branding of our business. It allows me to express our identity visually, which feels personal and rewarding.
What has been the biggest hurdle you have had to overcome as a woman in business?
The biggest hurdle I’ve had to overcome is managing my own self-doubt. Imposter syndrome can be a challenge. There are times when I question whether I’m truly capable or deserving of success. But over the years, I’ve learned to embrace those feelings as part of the growth process. I remind myself that I’ve earned my place in this business through experience and hard work. Trusting my abilities and seeking support from other women in business has been incredibly empowering.
In terms of you and your business, what are you most proud of?
I am most proud of introducing a new kind of tour experience to Port Stephens, particularly as it is a region already filled with established operators. What excites me is bringing something unique to the area that highlights the western harbour’s natural beauty and deep historical roots. Our ability to offer something distinct, while also fostering a community spirit with other small businesses, is something I’m incredibly proud of. We’re not just a cruise company; we’re part of the fabric of the local tourism experience.
What strategies do you use to try and keep a work/life balance?
One of the key strategies I use to maintain balance is recognising when I need to step back and take time for myself. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the business and forget the importance of self-care. Whether it’s a quiet walk with my dog Buddy along Tilligerry Creek, playing my guitar, or simply taking a moment to unwind, I’ve learned that time out is essential for both my well-being and productivity. Prioritising these moments helps me recharge and return to my work with renewed energy and focus.
What do you love about being a businesswoman in Port Stephens?
Port Stephens is a remarkable location with such natural beauty and a welcoming community. I love being a part of this thriving business environment where I can connect with other small business owners who share the same passion for this area. Networking with other women in business has been especially rewarding. I enjoy collaborating with others, supporting each other’s growth, and collectively bringing more visitors to the region. There’s a real sense of camaraderie, and the opportunity to promote not just my own business but the wider local experience is something I truly value.
What do you enjoy doing when you don’t have your business hat on?
I play music (acoustic guitar and bass), so always have my guitar next to my desk. In my younger years I played in bands on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, my sole claim to fame is supporting the Screaming Jets at Richmond Uni back in the 1990s! I also love walking my dog Buddy along Tilligerry Creek early in the morning, it’s a beautiful 5km walking track and is my favourite way to start my day.
If you could give one piece of advice to a woman heading into the business world, what would it be?
My advice would be to plan, stay focused on your goals, and ensure that you build in time for yourself. Running a business is all-consuming, but it’s vital to maintain a healthy work / life balance. I find my best ideas and most sustainable success happens when I take care of my mental and physical health. Don't be afraid to take time out, learn from others, and embrace the challenges that come with growth.
Why did you choose to become a member of PSWIB?
I joined PSWIB because it offers a wonderful opportunity to network, connect, and learn from other women in business. I’m eager to hear about their experiences, gain new perspectives, and share my own journey. It’s all about growth—both personal and professional—and I believe this group can help me do just that. It’s a space where we can support each other, celebrate successes, and work together to elevate women in business.
