Getting to know Mary
Tell us about your current business. What do you offer, how long you’ve been there, size of your business?
I work with Aon Risk Services, who are the 3rd largest Insurance & Risk Adviser in the world. I have been here for 2 ½ years, but have many many many years in the industry.
I love to offer a personalised friendly service, for something that for most people is at best, really boring, and at worst, downright scary.
I’m here to guide you through your insurance needs and offer solutions that suit you and your business.
On a good day what do you love most about being in business?
Meeting people, making connections and making a difference to them.
What has been the biggest hurdle you have had to overcome as a woman in business?
I started off in the broking industry in the UK in the 90’s; the biggest hurdle was getting people to take me seriously. But I persevered, and nurtured lasting relationships, and I wouldn’t change anything.
In terms of you and your business, what are you most proud of?
The local teams, we like to work closely within our community, but also have global reach and a wealth of knowledge to tap into.
What strategies do you use to try and keep a work/life balance?
Book in my gym classes, walk the dog in nature every morning before work if I can (Port Stephens is definitely helping that) and trying to stay true to yourself and your values within your work.
What do you love about being a business woman in Port Stephens?
As a recent addition to Port Stephens, I love the connections, the friendliness and the community.
What do you enjoy doing when you don’t have your business hat on?
Travel and new experiences,\; this year I have witnessed an open, active volcano in Tanna, Vanuatu. Later this year I will be travelling to Shanghai for the F! Grand Prix, and then adding to a family visit in the UK with a cruise to the Norwegian fjords with my mum.
If you could give one piece of advice to a woman heading into the business world, what would it be?
Be true to yourself and your values. Use your strengths, whatever they may be, and don’t try and pretend to be someone you are not.
Why did you choose to become a member of PSWIB?
Mid Last year when I knew I was moving to the area.
